Roofing Debris Guide: Estimating Shingle Weight
How to calculate tear-off weight by square count and layer so you rent the right container.
Roofing basics
Roofers measure roofs in squares, with one square equal to 100 square feet. A typical single-family home in Smyrna has 20 to 35 squares of roof. When a roof is replaced, all of that material comes off and must be disposed of.

Estimating your load
Multiply the square count by the weight per square, then by the number of layers being removed. A 25 square roof with one layer of architectural shingles is about 25 x 350 = 8,750 lbs, or roughly 4.4 tons. Add 10 percent for underlayment, flashing and any decking replaced.
Choosing a container
- Up to 20 squares, one layer: 10 or 15 yard
- 20-35 squares, one layer: 15 or 20 yard
- Two layers or 35+ squares: 20 yard with extra tonnage, or two hauls
- Tile or slate: heavy-debris container, sized by weight
Placement tips for roofers
Position the container close to the roof edge or chute location and away from where dump trailers or material deliveries will need to park. Ask us for boards if the container will sit on a homeowner's driveway.
